Old Milwaukee Cafe breakfast

· Posted Sunday April 30, 2006 by jamie

So yesterday, we finally went to breakfast for the first time at Old Milwaukee Cafe on Sixth. This in some ways is kind of silly, seeing as it is only about four blocks away from our house, but we are big fans of the breakfast menu at Shakabrah, so sue us…

We had to wait outside a while for a table. I’ve never seen anyone waiting outside the restaurant before, so I’m assuming this was a fluke, but regardless it showed that people genuinely like the place and are willing to wait for a table.

The waitress was supremely nice, offered advice on menu items, kept the coffee mugs full, and generally made the visit pleasant.

We tried the Cafe Scramble and the Huckleberry Pancakes between the two of us. The scramble was a great egg/potato/veggie item that came out great and provided some leftovers for this morning. The pancakes, made from fresh batter, were big and awesome; the huckleberries were heavenly, but the cakes would have been just as enjoyable plain.

Extra props to the Milwaukee for their well displayed involvement in fund raising for breast cancer awareness. They have monthly pancake breakfasts leading up to a 3-day walkathon in August from which 100% of the funds go to the Breast Cancer Foundation, and they’ve already well exceeded their fundraising goals by thousands of dollars. We like to see that sort of thing coming from businesses, showing that it doesn’t always have to be about the bottom line.

End result: when we’re going out for breakfast and can tear ourselves away from the Huevos Rancheros at Shakabrah, the Old Milwaukee Cafe will be high on our list.
